Skilled Migration Visas
Australia's Skilled Migration Programme is designed to target migrants who have skills, qualifications or outstanding abilities to contribute to the Australian economy. It is also designed to address specific skill shortages in Australia and enhance the size and skill level of the Australian labour force.
Skilled migration visa categories:
1. Point-based skilled migration visas
There are three visa subclasses that fall into this category all of which require the same basic requirements:

be at least 18 years of age or over and younger than 50 years of age at time of invitation

be assessed as having competent English language ability

nominate an occupation on the skilled occupations list (SOL) or;

consolidated sponsored occupations list (CSOL) (state or territory nominated only)

obtain a suitable skills assessment in the nominated occupation
-
must pass the points test
-
meet the health and character requirements
Skilled Independent Visa (189)
This visa is for points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government.
It allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.
Applicants must nominate an occupation on the skilled occupations list (SOL) to be eligible for this subclass.
It entitles the eligible candidates for Permanent Residency visa that will allow all applicants to live, work and study anywhere in Australia.
Skilled Nominated Visa (190)
This visa is for points-tested skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory government agency. It allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.
Applicants must nominate an occupation on either skilled occupations list (SOL) or consolidated sponsored occupations list (CSOL) to be eligible for this subclass.
Approved applicants must intend to live, work and study in the nominating state or territory for 2 years on arrival.
Skilled Regional Nominated or Sponsored Visa (subclass 489)
The Skilled-Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489) is for skilled workers and their families to live, work and study in specified regional areas in Australia for four years.
Applicants will require either nomination from a state or territory, or be sponsored by an eligible Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen relative.
If nominated by a state or territory; approved applicants must live, work and study in a specified regional area in order to comply with the visa conditions.
If sponsored by an eligible relative, approved applicants must nominate an occupation on the skilled occupations list (SOL) and must live, work and study in a designated area in order to comply with the visa conditions.
Holders of the Skilled Regional Nominated/Sponsored Visa (subclass 489) may be eligible to apply for permanent residency visa, should they be able to satisfy the criteria for the Skilled Regional (Residence) visa (subclass 887).
2. Skilled Regional Residence Visas (subclass 887)
This visa is a Permanent residency visa for holders Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489) and some other visa subclasses. No expression of interest required and no points tested.
Key Criteria for applying for Skilled Regional (Residence) visa (subclass 887):
Holders of Skilled Regional Nominated (state or territory nominated) visa (Subclass 489)

have lived in a Specified Regional Area for at least two years

have worked full time in a Specified Regional Area for at least one year

have complied with the conditions on their visa

Holders of Skilled Regional Sponsored (sponsored by an eligible relative) visa (Subclass 489)

have worked full time in a Designated Area for at least one year
